XF 201: Day 59, 3x10 "731"

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the scariest XF villains (to me) are not the mutants or the aliens or the monsters, but the humans who choose to be monstrous. That scene where the group of soldiers guns down the patients at the leprosy compound is horrifying. At this point in the mytharc, the writers are drawing on a lot of WWII and Holocaust references, suggesting that perhaps the entire conspiracy is not about aliens but rather about human beings treating other human beings like merchandise.

Spoilers ahead

That, to me, is far more terrifying than them simply colluding with aliens. With the aliens, that choice is being taken away from the human members of the conspiracy - they comply or they die. That makes them almost sympathetic. It means that the abductees they experiment on die for a reason. Yes, they die in horrible agony, but they're dying to preserve the human race.

But if they had chosen to leave the mythology here, and not add in the concrete alien elements that pop up later this season, that would be mean that there is nothing sympathetic about the Syndicate nor noble in the deaths of those on whom they experiment. It would mean that they are simply men behaving monstrously, furthering an agenda of human exploitation for no other reason than that they can.

In short, I would hate and fear them more if there were no aliens, and it might actually make for a better story.

End Spoilers

Anyway, that's my comment on the mytharc elements of this episode. There's been no small amount of fanfic written exploring the ramifications of Scully's chip - if it could know your thoughts, could it give you thoughts?

Once again, Scully's all "Don't do the thing!" and Mulder's like "I'm already doing the thing." These two may have unspoken communication, but sometimes there's some serious noise on the line. Also Mulder thinks with his massive conspiracy boner way way way before he actually thinks with his head.
