Anyone Else Feel Bad About Wil Wheaton?

Like other people before, I have often complained about the character of Wesley Crusher in TNG, my favorite sci-fi series ever. What I find sad with this situation is that the actor, Wil Wheaton, seems like a really good person. He's been involved in conferences, seems to genuinely like the spirit of the series, and has done some commendable speeches on education, bullying and other topics.

I came to realize that the main reason I didn't like the character of Wesley was due to my own life experiences with nepotism in the workplace. I can't believe that nobody mentioned the huge inconsistency of introducing this theme in a Star Trek show, i.e., having the son of a crew member (herself close to the Captain, to make things worse) enjoying privileges that others of the same age wouldn't have had without a relative, in a universe that is otherwise presented as having overcome social inequalities and so many other flaws of social life.

Wesley's character could have been written differently right from the start, and it wouldn't have caused so much stir. There are so many ways in which a good script can offer perspective - just think of the great episode Lower Decks. Just to give one example, if the same Wesley had been presented as an intern from Starfleet Academy, say, without family on board, and portrayed in a slightly more realistic way, perceptions could have been completely different. Both the fans and the actor could have had a better experience out of it.

Anyway, it's still unclear to me how this could have happened.
