In season 9, episode 13 (the purge) Sam and Dean argue over Dean saving Sam's life. Dean (having used Gadreel to keep Sam alive) says that if the situation were reversed, and he were dying, Sam would do the same thing. Sam counters that he wouldn't, and that Dean is just afraid of being alone. At the end of season 10, Dean seeks out Death so that he can live alone. So that in solitude, he won't be able to hurt anyone else, and the mark can't release evil. Sam on the other hand, won't let Dean throw himself away, and tempts the apocalypse (again) to keep his brother close. I think it's interesting that Dean is actually willing to live out eternity alone, and Sam can't stand the thought of living without his brother. Both of them seem to constantly fight over who gets the noble death, and neither can live knowing the other is suffering alone.
