Recently watched DS9 S4E14 and had a thought.

What incident caused me to want to make this post was when Sisko was reaming Worf for commiting pre meditated murder with his brother by participating in the ritual (i cant remember the name offhand).

I know i'm going to catch hell for this (being its the star trek subreddit), but this episode displayed what has always annoyed me about Star Trek in general. Its the hypocrisy, or maybe i should say inconsistency. I know the idea was that the Federation is kind of the epitome of idealism, especially with things like the prime directive. I just feel like they did a pretty piss poor job of being consistent in their ideals.

Real life is never that cut and dry, that's why i tended to like shows like Stargate SG:1 or Farscape more than i ever did Star Trek. They really explored the grey areas of morality and ethics in (my opinion) a better manner than Star Trek ever did. Its also the reason i liked Enterprise as a Star Trek show more than the others.

Star Trek always just felt like this "my way or the highway" kind of philosophy. It was always this aire of moral superiority and they (seemingly) had no issues pushing that philosophy onto other cultures or worlds. They always claimed they were very tolerant and accepting of other people's cultures, but in practice they actually werent. It always just kind of reminded me a lot of communism, in so much as that the ideas look great on paper, or in theory, but in practice just flat doesn't work.

That being said, i have overall been enjoying DS9 and it has caused me to be able to say that i am, overall, a fan of Star Trek.
