Gods dammit, this weekend is Xena's 20th anniversary and I didn't get her anything for it.
Dear Xena (the show and the character),
Thank you for making me the person that I am today at 28 years old. Thank you for the night in 1995 when the series premiere reached out to an 8-year old and influenced the rest of her life. Thank you for giving me the courage to try (and love) acting (for fun and semi-professionally), horseback riding, fencing and martial arts just so I could be like my hero. Thank you for meaning so much to me that 20 years later that I feel like Xena is as much of my life today as it ever was. Thank you for being a beacon of strength when I was bullied for being weird and thank you especially to all of the actors and actresses that I met over 10 years of conventions who treated me like I was the most special person in the world. I will always talk highly of you and will cherish your autographs. And finally, thank you to my parents who didn't discourage me from being obsessed with a strong, female role model and especially to my mother who attended 12 Xena, Star Trek, Star Wars and Farscape conventions with me and who practically body-surfed over a violent crowd of women in 1997 trying to get Lucy Lawless' autograph after her performance in the Broadway show Grease -- just cause it meant that much to a 9 year old to have her hero's autograph.
Anyway. I can't believe that 20 years ago yesterday, September 4th, 1995, I turned on a TV show that absolutely changed the course of my life.
But that's what Xena is. Its not TV show; its something that changes the course of your life. Its what showed me The Way.
Edited: for a missed word
