I think I found a meta reference to Firefly in Dollhouse. In case you are unfamiliar, Dollhouse is another Joss Whedon series. Ran for two seasons on Fox and isn't usually (to my understanding) regarded as good as his prior work. I myself enjoy it.
In season one's "Man on the Street" Ballard is confronted by a fellow agent (played by Mark Sheppard; Badger in Firefly) who says Caroline is a whore with a "heart of gold". Firefly often featured characters whom didn't respect the career of a companion and called them a "whore". "Heart old gold" would be the companion house from the episode of the same name.
