I haven't posted very often on this sub, so I am making more of an effort to do so.
Allow me to explain my premise.
Reginald Barclay is my second-favorite recurring character in the entire series, second only to Q (as it should be).
Barclay, in many ways, represents what I would be in the "Star Trek" universe: A shy, introverted, neurotic man who has trouble fitting in.
While I may not necessarily have his somewhat lax work ethic (I always show up on time to work and do what is expected of me), even I have to admit that at times, depending on my state of mind, it's a struggle for me to do so.
But, it should be said that despite his flaws, Barclay has demonstrated a willingness to overcome them to save both the ship and others.
Although I was too young to understand it at the time I watched the series during its original run, I see Barclay as a role-model to me in how I might overcome my own flaws and manage to be a productive member of society.
Kudos to the writers for allowing this character to exist in the first place. And bravo to Dwight Schultz for bringing him to life.
