Like many of us, I just finally got done watching Season 8 and after many months of avoiding spoiler posts, I really want to talk about it.
I know some episodes were better than others, but am I the only one that thinks there was something missing this time around? Anyone else kind of feel like Clara, loving the Doctor for who he was and not who he is now?
NuWho has reminded me of the X-Files back in the day. There were "monster of the week" episodes and then there were episodes that explored the characters further and moved the larger plot around. I feel like with Season 8, all we got were "monster of the week" episodes. Clara, who was once an interesting a brave character with a sad past became just a very flat character (who lies to her boyfriend) and we never saw Danny for more than a few minutes a show.
And then there's the Doctor. He went from someone who was flawed, but had such a heart and such love for the human race to the old grump who lives next door who tolerates taking care of the human race seemingly just to feed his ego and a sick need to know everything. We've gone from "just this once, everybody lives" and "this planet is protected!" to a Doctor who is pretty nonchalant about people dying.
I feel like in previous seasons, I could get attached to characters who were only in one episode (and more importantly, so did the Doctor!). I felt sadder when I thought Ida Scott had died than when we found out Danny had died. Doctor Who used to have so much heart--it's what set it apart from similar shows, but that all feels different now.
So what do you guys think? So you like the Doctor better this way? Is there any chance the show will come back around? What were you overall impressions of season 8?
