Why was the TNG crew so surprised by the concept of inorganic life after previously having dealt with an enormous living space crystal?

I kind of figured something like finding your android crew member's brother and encountering a planet killing space crystal would be more memorable to take the shock off a bit when finding the silicon lifeforms later.
