The Minnesota convention has come to an end. What a weekend. Huge room? Check. Fired up crowd? Check. Actor attacked by street thugs? Check. Such a sad and weird side note to an otherwise great event. We are all so grateful that #MishaCollins didn't sustain more serious injuries. Though bad, it could have been much, much worse. Some jokes were made both backstage and on stage about the encounter, but sometimes, that's just how guys address stressful situations. At least that's how we guys from the #Supernatural universe do - just ask stroke survivor #RobBenedict or shoulder surgery veteran #JaredPadalecki. But I can assure you, we were all shocked and incredibly concerned when we heard the news. Even those not at the convention responded quickly. #JimBeaver and #KimRhodes immediately reached out to me. #TimOmundson texted me from England. #WilliamShatner blew up my phone with worried DMs.
Bad things happen to good people. And it stinks. But there are positive takeaways from the experience. If you ever questioned Misha's devotion to his fan base, question it no more. He stayed and took photos with a busted, swollen lip. No ego there, just commitment to giving back to the people who so passionately support him and his charities. Then there are the fans themselves. People pay a lot of money and travel great distances to attend these conventions. They could have could bitched and moaned about not getting their time with Misha. They could have reacted angrily about not getting what they paid for, but that didn't happen. The fans at #MinnCon were class acts all the way. I saw no anger or resentment, only sympathy and understanding. Disappointment? Sure. To be expected. But the overreaching sentiment was a mixture of shock and concern for Misha's health and welfare. Rob Benedict, #MattCohen and I were charged with the task of filling his panel slot, effectively turning our usual 45 minute stage talk into a nearly two hour experience. And even though folks were hoping to see someone else that day at that hour, they stayed with us. The seats remained filled and the questions kept coming, with stories and laugher (and a few tears induced by dreamy Matt) filling the air. It was, for lack of a better word, special. People - actors and fans - coming together to make the best of a bad situation - to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, as my grandmother used to say - and the result was a unique experience for both us and the fans than neither group will forget.
So I tip my cap to you, Minnesota Convention fans, especially to those of you who were in the theater that Saturday. You all showed true strength of character by letting fan disappointment take a back seat to human kindness and concern. We all appreciate it and won't forget it. You're good people. I look forward to taking the stage next year in that same room to bring you a long awaited hour of entertainment from Mr. Misha Collins. Until then, keep it classy with a dash of sassy.
