How Deep Space Nine ruined Fan Films

Love it or hate it, DS9 has had more influence on modern Trek than any other series. While the vast majority of Trek fan films are based on TOS, their writing, pacing, action, and characterization are mostly based on DS9 and sometimes even Voyager. This includes "darkness" and "grittiness", characters that speak in technobabble and exposition, and massive space battles and phaser fights.

One of the common complaints about JJ Trek is its reliance on action. These same critics often praise fan films as the true Star Trek torches bearers. And yet fan films are slopping over with scene after scene of CG space battles. Were did massive, several minute long space battles with multiple ships start appearing in Trek. DS9's pilot.

New Voyages, for instance, couldn't even do "The Child" without a space battle. "Enemy: Star Fleet" has almost no plot except the long, boring shoot-em-up chases. And Mindsifter surprised me not with a multi-ship battle with the Klingons. Pew Pew Pew.

Renegades and Axanar are both basically war movies. Most of the first is made up of one tedious phaser fight after another followed by ship after ship blasting one another with bridges shaking and sparking. The later so far has shown almost nothing but space battles, often with torpedoes that move at the speed of a tortoise, unnaturally extending action scenes into parodies of themselves. At least when someone shoots in JJ Trek it doesn't look like you can just step out of the way.

And rather than having characters interact on a human level they just talk at each other incessantly. Despite the horrendous levels of action these films are boring because no one says anything interesting or sincere. They just ramble about flow converters and heisenberg compensators. Not a single one of these films has ever gotten Kirk, McCoy, and Spock to do anything interesting all at the same time. Star Trek: Continues has a counselor for christ sake - the most boring character in TNG, and a holodeck - the place too many DS9 and Voyager plots took place. Why would anyone want this crap in their TOS?

My question is, why are Berman era Trek fans making TOS films? What is it about TOS that you like, because you don't get it and you're not emulating it. If you like DS9 and it's ilk, why not at least do like Renegades and set it in that era? The more I look at TOS fan filmery the most confused I get as to who these films are being made for.
